Two top leading telecom service providers, MTN and 9Mobile are planning to request for regulatory permission that allows the agreement to share their networks with customers.

According to Alan Sinfield, 9Mobile CEO, in an interview with The Africa Report on Monday, says a pilot free roaming scheme that allows customers of each company to switch to the network of the other where its own has no coverage has run.

The two telecom companies are seeking permission from Nigerian regulatory agencies for a full roaming agreement as the telecoms sector in Nigeria is regulated by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

The use of this facility will cost no extra charge on the side of the customers and would help to improve free roaming services in Africa and across the world.

In addition, people moving within the Economic Community of West African States were reported to be roaming without paying any charges since January as a result of the end roaming charges agreement made in 2020.

While building infrastructures by network providers individually to provide services to their customers can take all lot of time, network-sharing will help network roaming agreements to increase capital expenditure efficiency in a way since saved cash can be used to provide more infrastructure.

9Mobile CEO added that the need for collaboration extends to fibre-optic cables and that network provider should not be digging up the same hole one after another. He added that the industry should be doing more to collaborate to increase access because collaboration is the way forward for a market of this size.
